School Values and British Values - supporting our children to become responsible citizens
At High Ercall Primary School, our values are at the centre of our expectations in learning and life at school. We expect our children to be Responsible, Respectful, Reflective, Resilient and Resourceful, as citizens of our school community, and as learners striving to be the best they can be. These are our 5Rs.
In all our classrooms and around school you will see this, as our code of conduct and our code for learning. Children are recognised for their ability to apply these skills in all their learning, and in their conduct around school. In weekly assemblies, children recommend their peers for Learning Champion Certificates to acknowledge times when they have particularly shown an attribute of one of the 5Rs.
Our school values reflect the expectation for our children to develop British Values, as they are taught through the school curriculum, and through the wider curriculum and experiences offered at High Ercall. These fundamental British Values are defined as: democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. Children will develop their understanding of these values, appropriate to their age, as they grow and develop through school.
Through our provision of Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural aspects of the curriculum we will:
• enable our children to develop their self-knowledge, self-esteem and self-confidence;
• enable our children to distinguish right from wrong and to respect the civil and criminal law of England;
• encourage our children to accept responsibility for their behaviour, show initiative, and to understand how they can contribute positively to the lives of those living and working in the locality of the school and to society more widely;
• enable our children to acquire a broad general knowledge of and respect for public institutions and services in England;
• further tolerance and harmony between different cultural traditions by enabling children to acquire an appreciation of and respect for their own and other cultures;
• encourage respect for other people;
• encourage respect for democracy and support for participation in the democratic processes, including respect for the basis on which the law is made and applied in England.
